Double Duty

Academia: Pictures didn't happen on Friday, so y'all are getting a special treat today: weekend clothes! And weekend clothes that aren't sweatpants and a t-shirt on top of that. I wore this to church yesterday, and then to the movies to see The Muppets (which I loved... "Rainbow Connection" always makes me tear up). And then I fell asleep on the couch in it, and can I say how great it is that clothes I wore to church can double as couch napping clothes?

Sartorial: I've worn variations on this outfit a lot, but that's just because it's oh so comfy and still looks polished. Let me reiterate: church and a nap in the same outfit. Win-win. Win.

Church Lady Approved

Academia: Wednesdays are always busy days for me, especially lately. Yesterday started with a doctor's appointment at 8:00, followed by a full day at work. After work every Wednesday, I meet with two other Christian faculty members for a short prayer group; we pray for each other and our students and colleagues. And for the past month or so, Cary and I have been taking a marriage class at our church, which starts right after I get home from my prayer group, so I usually have enough time to run in the door, drop my lunch box, and head out. Wednesdays are always good days for me, but I'm also always ready to fall into bed as soon as I get home.

Sartorial: Long days require comfy clothes. Good things it was leggings o'clock yesterday! I felt like I colored outside the lines a bit trying to jazz up this black tunic, but I think I liked the effect of the blouse over the tunic. I got a compliment from a sartorially conservative woman at our church marriage class, so I guess it wasn't too weird an outfit.

The church ladies at my church are pretty open-minded, though. Not like this lady. Thank heaven, literally. So their stamp of approval might not mean this isn't weird. What do y'all think? Too far out on a limb? Or just right for international students, church ladies, and all points in between?

Swelter and Simplicity

Academia: As promised, here is what I wore on Friday. Friday was a day of a lot of running around. I went to a doctor's appointment at lunchtime, and then I left work early to go on a church leadership retreat. The retreat was about two and a half hours away from here, and we all got to stay at a hunting lodge that looked like it fell out of the Old West. Except for the shuffleboard court and enough bedrooms for 17 people. It was pretty awesome, and we all felt like our church might be in need of some more retreats. Like soon.

Sartorial: The thermometer in my car said 100 degrees on Thursday, not counting the humidity, so when I got dressed on Friday, I wanted to be as cool as possible. I've worn this combination of cardigan and dress several times (here, here, and here), but it's cool, comfortable enough for a long car ride, and basically a blank canvas for accessories. One thing the 30x30 taught me was not to be afraid of repeating outfits on the blog, because accessories really can make a difference in the overall look of an ensemble. I loved this combination of animal prints, and I loved that I wasn't sweating buckets. Sometimes simpler is better, especially when the temperature is in the triple digits.

Extra-Curricular: Church Lady

Hey y'all. For the next 10 days, I'm on vacation in sunny California. But never fear - Academia Sartorial will carry on! I have a series called "Extra-Curricular" lined up, which will feature what I wear when I'm not in the world of academia, as well as a few guest posts from some awesome bloggers I know you'll love. So without further ado...

Academia: One thing I do other than work at a university is go to church. Cary and I go to an Anglican church not far from our house, and we love it. Our priest is a great guy, the teaching is right on, and we have good friends there, including both of our siblings and their families. We go to the contemporary (read: guitar music) service at 11:00, and we usually get lunch afterwards with friends.

Sartorial: This outfit is pretty typical of what I wear to church every week. Our church is pretty informal, and people wear everything from ties to sneakers. There aren't any restrictions about ladies covering their shoulders or heads, so this outfit was fine for a Sunday service. However, it's normally at subzero temperatures in the sanctuary. I guess, "Thou shalt freeze thy brethren to death, thus necessitating the use of a jacket even when it's 95 degrees outside," is a commandment my Sunday school forgot to teach me.

I asked God for a breeze to make me look windblown and model-y.
